Sustainable Dairy Entrepreneurship with Indigenous Cattle

INTRODUCTION :
Mr. Rawal Chand, a progressive farmer from Nausar Village, Lohawat Block, Jodhpur District, Rajasthan, has emerged as a successful rural entrepreneur through sustainable dairy farming based on indigenous cattle breeds. Motivated to improve his livelihood through scientific livestock management, he joined the Agri Business Incubation Centre (ABIC), ICAR–Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI), Jodhpu.
TRAINING :
Mr. Rawal Chand participated in the 30-day Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) on Commercial Dairy Farming with Indigenous Cattle conducted from 4 February to 5 March 2021 at ICAR-CAZRI. The training provided comprehensive knowledge on scientific dairy farming practices, cattle nutrition, breeding, health management, clean milk production, and value addition of dairy products.
ACHIEVEMENTS :
After successfully completing the training, Mr. Rawal Chand established his dairy enterprise by purchasing 10 indigenous cows of Tharparkar and Rathi breeds, which are well adapted to the arid climate of Rajasthan. Through careful management and continuous efforts, he gradually expanded his herd to 21 cattle on his farm. Currently, his dairy unit produces around 60 litres of milk per day. The milk is marketed locally at approximately ₹50 per litre. To enhance profitability, he processes a portion of the milk into premium-quality desi cow ghee, which is sold at around ₹1,500 per litre. The enterprise generates an annual turnover of approximately ₹9.90 lakh, with a net profit of about ₹6.00 lakh, demonstrating the economic viability of indigenous cattle-based dairy farming in arid regions.

Mr. Rawal Chand’s success demonstrates that indigenous cattle-based dairy farming, coupled with value addition and integrated farming practices, can significantly enhance farm income and livelihood security. His enterprise serves as a model for farmers seeking sustainable, climate-resilient, and profitable livestock-based entrepreneurship in arid regions.
RECOGNITION :
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to sustainable farming, Mr. Rawal Chand received the Third Prize in the Dharti Mitra Award 2021 at Mumbai. The award included a cash prize of ₹1,00,000 along with a certificate of appreciation, acknowledging his efforts in promoting environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.
